Gareth Ainsworth has praised Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna after Wycombe defeated the league leaders 1-0 at Adams Park.

Brandon Hanlan’s amazing solo goal on 40 minutes was all that separated the two teams in what was Wanderers’ first win over Town in their history.

It ended a run of four games without a victory against them, in which they had scored just two goals prior to the triumph on December 17.

Speaking after the match, Ainsworth said of McKenna: “Kieran is a fantastic manager and he is at a fantastic football club.

“Anyone who finishes above Ipswich or Sheffield Wednesday deserved to be promoted as they are two huge, awesome, and great clubs.”

The boss also revealed how the victory against Ipswich still seems to ‘shock’ those in the game, despite both clubs being on a ‘level playing field’ in League One.

He continued: “When I first joined here [in 2009], games against teams like Ipswich or Sunderland would have been massive for Wycombe.

“Absolutely massive.

“But with the way the league has gone, there are now former Premier League teams in League One such as Derby County, Portsmouth, Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich Town, Bolton Wanderers, and Charlton Athletic and it’s brilliant to see them here.

“We only ever wanted to be in League One as that was the goal but now, everyone’s wildest dreams have been exceeded.

“That brings expectation so it’s a good feeling sometimes that people are shocked when a team like Wycombe can beat a club like Ipswich at home.

“We’re on a level playing field as we’re in the same league and it was a great performance.”

Finally, on squad selection and injuries, Ainsworth concluded: “Ryan Tafazolli, Sullay Kaikai, and Tjay De Barr were all absent with illness.

“Anis was ill midweek but was fit enough to play.”

Up next is Bristol Rovers at home on Boxing Day.
