Action is needed to address areas of concern at a High Wycombe care home, which was found to be failing in three out of five areas of care during a visit from health watchdog inspectors.

Chilworth House, in Rectory Avenue, provides care for up to 30 older people and younger adults.

Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission visited the home and found that Chilworth House “was not safe” after it failed in three of the five assessment areas.

Inspectors found that Chilworth House failed to provide care, treatment and support that meets people’s needs, staffing was inadequate and the quality and suitability of management were also below par.

The two areas that were commended was “treating people with respect and involving them in their care” and “caring for people safely and protecting them from harm”.

Chilworth House was told by inspectors that action was needed.

In the report, inspectors said: “A staff member told us they relied on care plans, spoke with people's next of kin and read assessments in order to know what people's care needs were.

“However, we saw no evidence of assessments undertaken in two care plans. This meant people's welfare and safety were at risk because the care delivered could not accurately reflect their; needs, preferences and diversity through adequate assessments.”

Inspectors found that care reviews were not regularly undertaken.

The way the service was led also raised concerns for inspectors.

The report stated: “We found audits were not undertaken regularly and when carried out there were no follow ups to see if identified actions from audits had been completed.

“Care reviews were carried out inconsistently and care records were not easily accessible, factual, accurate, and kept securely. We saw no evidence to show how identified risks to people who used the service were to be managed in two care plans.”

Management at Chilworth House said they have addressed the concerns in the report and improvements have been made to the service.

Simon Scott, Chilworth House proprietor, said: “All improvements are complete and we await a re-inspection by CQC.

“The time CQC take to re-inspect, in our opinion, should be speeded up but this is a matter for CQC.”
