Bereaved students in Marlow will receive additional support thanks to a charitable donation made by the Marlow Round Table.

The club donated £750 to Child Bereavement UK to help fund its work in schools after learning the ‘shocking’ statistics surrounding child bereavement.

During a presentation made to the Round Table, the charity highlighted that although 1 in 29 pupils are bereaved of a parent or sibling, 80% of teachers have no bereavement training.

And as a result, a number of schools in the area have received an acclaimed e-learning programme, ‘Supporting Bereaved Pupils’, free of charge.

Member of the Round Table, Nick Skelton said: “What we look for when deciding where to donate money are things that can benefit the people in our community.

“There have been a number of high profile deaths in Marlow, Kyrece Francis in particular, which will be a familiar story to many.

“We realised that at least everyone on the committee could recall someone who would benefit from the support, and while it is something that doesn’t bare thinking about, it is vitally important that the support for schools is there if it is needed.

“For any of us, losing a child or losing a parent early in our lives is the most awful thought imaginable, but in times of real grief and need it is organisations such as Child Bereavement UK that come to the fore and provide support and guidance for parents and children both in the home and in schools.

Director of Bereavement Services at the charity, Ann Rowland said: “We understand how difficult it is for schools to find the time and funds to release staff for traditional training, so Child Bereavement UK has developed a low-cost, time efficient solution.

“Its aim is to increase confidence and offer practical advice and skills for those supporting bereaved pupils.”

Child Bereavement UK supports bereaved families and trains around 7000 professionals every year helping them better understand and meet the needs of grieving families.
