An important slice of history is at risk of being lost forever if a corporate chain sticks with plans to change the name of a village pub, campaigners are warning.
Customers of the Chequers Inn in Prestwood – believed to date back to the mid 1700s – say they have been ignored by Greene King, which is pushing ahead with plans to rebrand the pub ‘The Prestwood’.
It is currently closed while a refurbishment takes place.
The current sign for The Chequers, which takes its name from the Prime Minister’s residence just a few miles away, was inaugurated by Harold Wilson.
The pub also counts post-war leader Clement Attllee among its former regulars.
A poll conducted by Prestwood Village Association found 80 per cent of those surveyed were against a name change, and 80 per cent were against a switch to ‘The Prestwood’ if a change had to be made.
