A High Wycombe parkrun, which celebrated its 200th run at the weekend in support of a foodbank in the town, has been praised for its “brilliant” community spirit.

Around 400 people took part in the Wycombe Rye 5k parkrun on Saturday at The Rye off Bassetbury Lane, which has seen more than 5,000 runners complete over 36,000 runs since its conception in 2012.

As part of the celebrations, participants donated food to the One Can Trust foodbank in Easton Street which currently distributes around 300 parcels a month.

Stephanie Richards, project manager for One Can Trust, said she was “overwhelmed” by the generosity of the parkrunners who donated enough food items to fill her collection bins “several times over”.

She said: “We were delighted to be selected by Wycombe Parkrun as their chosen charity and thrilled to meet so many runners who were really interested in the foodbank.

“The donations exceeded our expectations, and were much needed as stocks are particularly low this time of year.

“The community spirit at this brilliant event is easy to see.”

Wycombe District Council chairman cllr Mahboob Hussain took part as an honorary starter to mark the occasion.

Organiser Alistair France said: “Cllr Hussain praised parkrun for all that it was doing to encourage people into health and fitness and hoped that one day, rather than 400 people running around the Rye, there would be 1,000.”

Mr France said cllr Hussain was “particularly impressed” with the 20 people who voluntarily give up their time each week to allow other people to run and keep fit.

The Wycombe Rye parkrun is a free timed run that takes place every Saturday morning at The Rye.
