A Buckinghamshire MP has called for change after a parent was dragged through the family courts 25 times.

Chesham and Amersham MP Sarah Green has called for further reforms to the family courts system.

The Liberal Democrat MP told the House of Commons how one of her constituents faced ‘control' and ‘manipulation’ by their ex-partner.

She said: “Over the course of three years, one of my constituents was dragged back to the family courts by their ex-partner 25 times.

“Despite having the bravery to leave an abusive relationship, they faced further trauma as the result of an ex-partner who was able to use the family courts system to further control and manipulate them and their child.

“Can I ask the minister what steps he’s taking to ensure the family courts cannot be abused in this way?”

Justice minister Mike Freer said a review is being carried out.

Domestic Abuse Act 2021 prohibits domestic abuse perpetrators and victims from cross-examining each other in person during certain family and civil proceedings, he noted.

Mr Freer said his department is reviewing “how we can ensure that those people caught up in the family court system are protected from such abuse.”

The Government is also consulting on proposals to encourage increased mediation to ensure more disputes are resolved out of court, the Commons was told.
