The mother of a student from High Wycombe who was murdered in 2019 has reached out to the parents of Sarah Everard three years after she was killed by a serving police officer in South London.
Lisa Squire, the mother of Libby Squire, who was murdered by Pawel Relowicz in January 2019, has expressed her solidarity with the parents of Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old who was killed by Metropolitan Police officer Wayne Couzens in March 2021.
Mrs Squire, who lives in High Wycombe told The Mirror that she had reached out to Sarah Everard's parents following the third anniversary of their daughter's death to let them know that she "understands their pain".
She drew parallels between the two murder cases, suggesting that the two deaths could have been prevented had the proper checks been in place for their killers, both of whom had committed previous offences.
"Both perpetrators had exposed themselves and neither were caught. How long will it be until we learn something from this? Libby died five years ago and Sarah two years later - it's now three years since Sarah died and nothing has changed.
"This is about two sets of parents who have lost children to homicide with a sexual motivation. It's a very isolating position and I imagine the Everards are feeling a similar way.
"I just want them to know I am here if and when they need me."
An inquiry chaired by Lady Elish Angiolini said last week that Sarah Everard's killer Wayne Couzens should never have been a police officer and that chances to stop him were repeatedly ignored and missed. He is now serving a life sentence in prison with no parole.
Libby Squire's killer Pawel Relowicz was sentenced to live imprisonment in 2019, with a minimum of 29 years before his eligible for parole.
Mrs Squire spoke at the Home Affairs Select Committee last month calling for a tougher sentence for her daughter's murderer, who she fears will kill again if he is released.
According to the PA News Agency, in the year after Sarah Everard's murder 138 women were killed by a man or a man was the chief suspect in the death. In the same year in England and Wales, an estimated 798,000 women experienced sexual assault and more than 100,000 were raped or were victims of attempted rape.
