THE anger over the expenses furore that has embroiled politicians in Westminster is being echoed by voters in the run up to the county elections, A Marlow Town councillor has said.

Cllr Suzanne Brown, who has been canvassing for the Conservatives in Marlow, said she has felt the brunt of the scandal which has dominated national headlines for the past fortnight when meeting residents on their doorsteps.

She said the outrage over MPs claims, which have ranged from buying bath plugs to maintaining moats with tax payers’ money, has been shifted on to local politicians and fears voter apathy will be reflected in a low turn out at the ballot box.

“What I’m concerned about is people won’t vote because they are fed up with what’s in the press and that’s the last thing that should happen.

“I totally agree that the MPs are wrong and I’m glad they have been found out but for them to not vote for a party that can the job is ridiculous,” Cllr Brown said.

She added it could not have come at a worse time.

MPs from across the political spectrum have faced accusations of manipulating the system to pay for their home furnishings or other luxuries in the ongoing expose by the Daily Telegraph.

Cllr Brown said: “They have said it on the doorstep but locally we don’t have these expenses, it’s not the same but they tar us with the same brush because they say we are all politicians.

“Local politics is completely different."
