FOR Gerrards Cross CC the equation next weekend is simple – they need to beat Oxford in their final match and hope both Harefield and Aston Rowant lose.

That is the only set of results that can keep Steve Rimmer’s side in Division One of the Home Counties League after they were beaten by Burnham last weekend to remain at the foot of the table.

However, defeats for Harefield and Aston Rowant mean they are still just three and nine points ahead of them respectively, well within range.

Cross did have a chance to climb above both last Saturday, when they made a decent start with the bat despite being inserted.

They reached 44 before three quick wickets undid the good work.

However, a 76-run stand between Dan Solway (84 not out) and Dan Hampton (36) put Cross back on track as they recovered to 211-8.

That looked more than defendable as they reduced Burnham to 35-3 with Jamie Hoddle (2-40) and Tom Hampton (2-38) striking early.

But Awais Zia’s 52 off 45 balls plus 54 from Harvey Gandam got Burnham back into it and at 189-8 the game was evenly poised.

However, despite Cross throwing everything at the Burnham tail, the hosts stood firm.
