AN 11-year-old boy eclipsed legends of world cricket at Wormsley Cricket Ground on Sunday when he stepped over the ropes to a take a hat-trick in a charity match.

Dee Jarvis, from Oxfordshire, had only gone to watch as a Brian Lara XI took on Warwickshire’s 1994 champions to raise money for a new cricket stadium in Rwanda.

But former England star Matthew Hoggard plucked Jarvis from the crowd in the penultimate over and the boy wonder responded by removing three former professionals in successive balls to win the match for Lara’s all stars and walk away with the Man of the Match award.

Hoggard and Lara were joined by Andrew Strauss and England women’s vice captain Heather Knight in a match that raised more than £50,000 for the charity.

Brian Lara said: “It’s been a great day and it’s great to see so much support for the project.

"There’s a huge the enthusiasm for the game in Rwanda, and it’s vital that we support the Rwandan Cricket Association in harnessing the huge talent available.

"The last 20 years have seen the country make huge strides and sport can play a key part in building on that progress.

"When complete, the stadium and facilities, along with the local supporters, will help to create a lasting legacy for the game in this wonderful country.”
