DAI Young says Wasps still have everything to play for in the Champions Cup despite losing 25-20 to Leinster on their return to European rugby’s top tier club competition.

Wasps led 20-8 late in the first half of their Pool Two match at the RDS in Dublin.

But they had the conditions behind them at that stage and, against the wind, were pinned back as the Irishmen began to chip away at their lead.

In the end, Wasps had to dig deep to hold on to a losing bonus point from their trip across the Irish Sea.

Young said: “I’m thankful we’ve come away with a losing bonus point at the end to be honest with you.

“Certainly going into half-time, although the scoreboard was in our favour at 20-11, we felt we hadn’t done enough.

“With those conditions it was always going to be hard to play against the wind and we felt we needed to score first.

“We had opportunities in the first ten minutes after the break to come away with something, but we weren’t quite accurate enough.

“We handed possession and territory to Leinster and they got momentum, so for large parts of our game we ended up defending. “I was really pleased with the way we defended and with the commitment the boys showed, but we struggled to get a foothold and enough possession to really cause Leinster problems.

“Once they’ve got the momentum, they’re a really difficult team to turn that momentum back in your favour.”

However, Harlequins’ home win over Castres means the pool is still wide open and Wasps can get themselves right back into it by beating the Aviva Premiership rivals at Adams Park on Sunday afternoon.

Young said: “This group is not won and lost in one game.

“It was good to come away with a bonus point and I don’t think many teams will come away with a win here.

“It was disappointing not to get a bit more out of it, but we have to be thankful with the point.

“We need to bounce back next week and go for a home win; if we get that we’ll still be sitting well.”
