CHRISTIAN Wade must wait a little longer to leave international defenders in his wake after being overlooked by England for the Autumn Internationals.

A long-term injury has cost Wade, who hasn’t managed to get back to his dazzling best in the half-dozen or so games he’s played since returning from an ankle injury that sidelined him for nine months.

For once, he hasn’t been quick enough and not even his sensational try against Leinster at the weekend was enough to convince England coach Stuart Lancaster, whose mind might have been made up after defensive clangers against Harlequins and Bath.

Wasps director of rugby Dai Young said: “We’ve had to nurse him back and make sure we don’t rush him back into it. With every game he’s getting better but by his own admission he wasn’t playing as well as he’d have liked early doors.

“He wasn’t as confident in himself as he normally is but he showed at the weekend that he’s capable of something pretty special. I’m sure that try will be the catalyst to kick him on further and get him back to where he can be.

“He’ll be disappointed but he understands that because of his injury he hasn’t been where he normally is.

“I’m sure he’ll get back there quickly and it’s up to him to put pressure on now for the Six Nations.”
