Amersham and Chiltern won for the first time since September on Saturday as they avoided a tenth consecutive defeat by seeing off Tring 24-15.

After nine straight losses in National League 3 London & SE Richie Williams and his team were finally able to toast victory after recovering from an early set-back to win at Weedon Lane.

With confidence levels diminished by their poor run, the home side could have been forgiven for getting that sinking feeling once again when they fell behind with just a couple of minutes gone as Tring forced their way over in the corner.

But, far from rolling over, the home side responded well and scored their first try of the match when centre Rhys Keith dived over on the left-hand side after 17 minutes.

The conversion was missed but they were ahead soon after when Jack Kenyon slotted a penalty.

Amersham headed into half-time leading 13-7 as winger Sam Portland broke the whitewash to score following a well worked move.

Kenyon was again on target as the game moved into the second half before debutant Pip Blake took centre stage with a try in the corner to make it 21-7.

The home side’s nerves were jangling with five minutes left as the visitors attacked down the right wing and scored an unconverted try, before adding a penalty moments later to set-up a tense finale.

But, once again, the boot of Kenyon proved reliable and he put the game to bed with his third successful penalty.

With no game this weekend Amersham will next be in league action on January 3 when they make the trip to play Bury St Edmunds.
