Wanderers dug deep to beat Northampton and although their win proved to be in vain a number of players caught the eye during Saturday’s win.

Nico Yennaris was deployed in a holding midfield role in place of Matt Bloomfield and he did his job to perfection: breaking up a number of Cobblers attacks and setting Blues on the front foot. The 21-year-old also showed what he can do going forward as he latched onto Paul Hayes’ though ball and coolly slotted home his first career goal.

It’s been a season to remember for Alfie Mawson, and the fans’ favourite improved his standing with the travelling faithful even further when he picked out the top corner with just seconds remaining to win the game for Blues.

Up front, Aaron Holloway turned his huge promise into a goal as he volleyed home the opener as the ball fell to him in the box. The striker was a constant threat to the Cobblers backline until he was withdrawn in the second half.

Aaron Pierre returned to the starting XI after a one match ban and the imposing centre half slotted back into the team seamlessly. He and Mawson did well to contain Northampton’s top scorer Marc Richards, and Pierre made a crucial goal saving block in the second half.
