As a Brentford player Sam Wood picked up a League Two winners medal in 2009 after helping the Bees amass 85 points.

On Saturday he helped Wanderers reach the 84 point mark, which would have been good enough to be promoted from the fourth tier of English football in each of the past six seasons and would have seen Blues finish joint top in the last campaign.

It was also a record breaking tally of points for the club, but was only good enough for fourth place as Bury pipped them to the final automatic promotion place by a single point.

Wood said it was “crazy” that their efforts didn’t result in a top three finish, but insisted that the team will go again in order to reach League One via the play-offs.

“We were prepared to play against whichever team it was and it’s turned out to be Plymouth,” he said.

“We went down there and we won down there. They beat us at home so it’s going to be a tough two legs.

“It’s going to be interesting and it’s going to be a good few weeks. Hopefully the fans can stay with us, supports us and hopefully we can give them a good day out at Wembley.”

The 28-year-old said he had an “inkling” about how results were going elsewhere thanks to the chants of the 916 fans in the away end and a smattering of Wycombe supporters who stood on a hill overlooking the ground to get a glimpse of the action.

Wood did however say that he was in the dark about results elsewhere until the final whistle and despite finding out that Bury’s win against Tranmere had denied them of third place he was upbeat following Alfie Mawson’s late winner at Sixfields.

He said: “We’ve finished on a positive so hopefully we can take that into the next two legs. We’re upbeat, we’re fine.

“We knew it was out of our hands, so we kind of thought that we were in the play-offs anyway as we needed results elsewhere to go our way.

“All the boys knew that whatever happened we were going to be in the play-offs, but we just needed a bit of luck and it didn’t come our way. Now we’ll prepare for the play-offs.”

At the beginning of the season Wanderers were one of the favourites to be relegated, but a remarkable effort from one of the smallest squads in the league ensured their target of 55 points was achieved and then surpassed a long time ago.

Compared to the hardships and struggles of the last campaign, Wood says this season has been a massive success for the club.

“We finished fourth in the league on 84 points, one point behind Bury and we couldn’t have asked for anymore after last season,” he said.

“With the budget we’ve got this year, I think we’ve used about 20 players which is ridiculous. The age of some of these players as well. Aaron (Pierre) and Alfie (Mawson) are only 22 and 21 themselves, (Matt) Ingram, 21, it’s crazy.

“Everyone knows what we’re all about. We’re close, we’re like a little family and that’s how we’re going to keep it for the next few weeks.”

The midfielder, who's been playing left-back in the absence of Joe Jacobson, picked up an award at the club's end of season awards on Sunday night. Find out which one by clicking here
