CHAIRBOYS chief Gareth Ainsworth will let his team decide who will be on spot-kick duty tomorrow if they are awarded one against Northampton Town.

With regular penalty taker Paul Hayes injured, Garry Thompson has taken the last two, scoring against Barnet but slippering one straight to the keeper in Tuesday’s win over Cambridge.

His miss didn’t matter as the Blues won in the end but it has put the issue of who should take penalties into debate.

Ainsworth said: “I will let the boys sort it out. Obviously we had good practice at Wembley in the play-off final with five or six who scored there so I am sure they will fancy their chances but Tommo [Thompson] is an experienced lad and between them they will sort it out. I want the person who is the most confident to take it.

“I know the type of guy Tommo is and I think he will want to step up and take one and put it right.”
It is a topic Ainsworth has experience of.

He said: “I missed one for QPR under Gary Waddock and I never took another one. I scored eight out of nine until my last one against Stoke City at Loftus Road which was every similar to Tommo’s. The keeper actually did me a favour by saving it because mine might not even have reached! I have been where Tommo has been so I will leave it to him.”
