Wycombe Wanderers let a two goal lead slip to draw 2-2 at home against Portsmouth in League Two.

Michael Harriman and Garry Thompson gave the Blues the lead in the first half before Caloan Lavery and Adam Webster completed the Pompey comeback.

The result sees Wycombe head into Tuesday’s match at Bristol Rovers in ninth position.

The Chairboys were playing in their first home game in the league for five weeks and produced little of note in the opening exchanges.

Portsmouth have been scoring at will and boasted the third highest goals for tally in the league and were in free-scoring mood during their 6-0 win against York on Tuesday.

Their start belied any sense of the quality attacking play that had seen the visitors produce such a dominant display and the game settled into a staccato tempo.

A nice piece of interplay between Paul Hayes and Michael Harriman allowed the forward to dink a cross in after 25 minutes but Sido Jombati miscued his volley.

The game erupted into life as Portsmouth goalkeeper Brian Murphy came sprinting off his line and sent a poor clearance to the feet of Luke O’Nien.

His shot was poor but reached Harriman who turned and placed a superb effort into the empty net from all of 35 yards to give the hosts the lead.

Moments later they doubled it as Harriman turned provider after he had been released down the wing by a floated pass from Hayes.

His pinpoint cross found the onrushing Thompson who stretched to poke a volleyed effort home and give Wanderers a two goal advantage out of nowhere.

The quick fire double seemed to spark Pompey into action as they came forward in the 33rd minute and a dangerous low cross fizzed across the six yard box. However, Wycombe were now playing with real confidence and a clever back heel from Thompson gave Sam Wood a clear cut chance to make it three.

His shot was weak though and he fired straight at Murphy from just outside the corner of the six yard box.

Aaron Pierre produced a last-ditch challenge in the 45th minutes to knick the ball away from Marc McNulty.

Just a minute later Portsmouth were not to be denied as McNulty raced through completely unmarked and unselfishly slide the ball to Lavery to tap into an empty net.

The goal came after confusion in Wycombe back-line had allowed McNulty to run through completely unmarked from a long ball forward.

It was a bitter blow for the Blues in a half where they had rarely looked like conceding and taken their chances well.

The second half started in a scrappy manner as Jason McCarthy picked up a booking for a reckless challenge after over running the ball.

Thompson then attempted to insert a piece of class to proceedings as he charged down on goal and had a chipped effort sail just over the bar.

Portsmouth were level just 10 minutes into the second half as a Adam Webster connected with a free header that squeezed under Matt Ingram from Ben Davies’ corner.

It was symptomatic of the poor defending that had troubled Wycombe earlier in the year and Webster had the freedom of the Wanderers’ area to pick his spot.

Hayes then went close to restoring the lead as he found himself free at the back post from Wood’s corner but his volley was easily saved.

Wit the scores level Wycombe applied far more pressure but while they had a lot of territory and multiple set-pieces they struggled to force any clear openings.

Anthony Stewart then made a brilliant tackle as Gareth Evans raced through on goal. McNulty was on the borderline of being offside as he was put through to release Evans but the Wanderers’ centre-back showed great speed to recover.

Kyle Bennett then showed great balance to escape a challenge and work Ingram from the edge of the box with 10 minutes remaining.

Stewart almost gifted Portsmouth a winner as he turned into trouble in his own area. He was fortunate that the referee blew for a debateable foul as Enda Stevens fired at goal.

Pierre was inches away from conceding a penalty as he tripped Lavery on the edge of the box.

From the resulting free kick Davies struck at goal and Ingram did well to push his effort away from the box.

It was the final attempt on goal of what was a pulsating match which either side could have won but ultimately a draw was a fair result.
