Reading FC Women’s search for their first win in the Women’s Super League (WSL) One continued on Sunday as they drew 1-1 with Sunderland Ladies.

The match, which took place at Adams Park, was decided by two penalties as Reading fought back through Helen Ward’s successful spot-kick to secure a point with 16 minutes remaining. The incident also saw a Sunderland player sent off.

Reading made a poor start as the concession of an eighth minute penalty gave Beth Mead the chance to open the scoring.

While her effort was superbly saved by Mary Earps, the Reading number one could do nothing to prevent Mead turning home the rebound.

The point was well deserved for Reading but winger Emma Follis could not hide her disappointment at their failure to secure all three points.

“We are disappointed again, we’ve come away wanting more and it’s just not good enough,” she told the Reading Women’s website.

“We need to take our chances especially if they have gone down to 10. We’re just missing that little last thing which is so annoying.

“We have got another point on the board. We’re still looking for that win but it’s just really disappointing.

“There is no pressure at the moment. We’re all quite desperate to get the three points and I feel like we’ve deserved it a few times and we just need to keep working hard.”

The result leaves Reading in eighth place in the WSL1 table, just one place and three points above basement club Doncaster Rovers Belles.

They will look to pick up a much coveted first league win when they take on Birmingham City Ladies away from home in their next match on Thursday, May 19.
