Longevity can often be hard to find in sport, but for High Wycombe captain Nathan Hawkes it is the essential ingredient for a successful cricket team.

This hunger for success served Hawkes and the club well as they claimed the Home Counties Premier League Division One title in 2015.

The defence of said title has been stable if unspectacular this year – Wycombe are four points behind leaders Banbury – and Hawkes now feels the time is right for the club to push on.

He said: “I don’t just want to win the league once or win it every other year. I think the record is two years on the trot and I would like to see us beat that.

“We want to look to dominate as much as we can and the club are committed to getting things right in both the league and cup competitions.”

Wycombe have threatened to reach the heights of last season, which saw them win the league by 25 points in Hawkes’ first year as captain, throughout the opening eight games of 2016.

However, a failure to perform as a team has been detriment to their cause and they have often relied on individual brilliance ahead of cohesive team displays.

It is a symptom which Hawkes wants to see eradicated from Wycombe’s play and he believes they have the ability to kick on from their current position.

“We have lost two games and we are still up there near the top of the league. You maybe wouldn’t have expected that so it’s a good thing,” he said.

“The season up until now, we probably haven’t been quite at the races as a side and we haven’t performed as well as we could as a team.

“Individual performances have pulled us through and we are still looking for that all-round performance.”

Hawkes’ own level has dipped below the dizzying heights which saw him smash 820 runs at an average of 102.5 last year, and he has so far struggled with the bat this summer.

It is an issue which he refuses to shirk and while his form may have slumped, he believes the last year as captain has given him a far greater knowledge of the game.

“Coming off last season there was a bit of expectation and I have not clicked straight back into it in the league,” Hawkes said.

“I have been way off it and I hold my hands up. I have not got anywhere near the amount of runs I would have expected at this time of the season.

“Last year was the first year I took over as captain and I had to learn quickly, especially as this club is so used to winning. I have definitely got a lot more experience over the last 12 months.”
