Dayle Southwell scored a second half header to cancel out John Egan’s opener and earn Wycombe Wanderers a draw in their pre-season friendly with Brentford.

The 22-year-old scored in the 77th minute to mark his first appearance at Adams Park with a goal and earn Wanderers a deserved draw.

The hosts played in an attacking manner and will be happy with the workout ahead of the visit of QPR on Friday.

Gareth Ainsworth once again took the opportunity to give a number of trialists the opportunity to impress.

His most pressing concern between now and the start of the season is to find a goalkeeper but he could take little from the two on show tonight.

Bar a smart low save in the 27th minute the man between the sticks in the first half had little to do.

Wycombe’s second trialist keeper was equally untested, and Ainsworth has work to do to find a new number one ahead of the League Two campaign starting.

Paul Hayes and Sam Wood missed out once after picking up knocks in during the Blues’ trip to France last week.

A bright start saw both sides push forward early on, but it was Wanderers who created the first opening with an incisive piece of play.

Aaron Pierre started the move with a precise through ball which dissected the centre-back and left-back to release Myles Weston.

The new arrival, who provided creative spark from the left throughout his 45 minute appearance, wasted no time in delivering a superb cross.

Garry Thompson met the ball sweetly in the air but Bees keeper Jack Bonham reacted quickly to turn his header over.

Weston was involved again just after the 20th minute as he delicately laid back a deep cross for Luke O’Nien who slid in to fire straight at Bonham.

Championship Brentford had done little to worry Wycombe, but were nonetheless ahead five minutes before the interval.

The breakthrough had a fortuitous stroke to it as a cross from the right deflected high up in the air and fell to Egan who could not miss on the volley from close range.

While the source of the goal was fortunate, Ainsworth would have been disappointed with the defending which saw Wanderers fail to attack the ball.

Brentford started the second half brightly and a smart move down the left almost saw them double their lead as Lasse Vibe broke free in the box.

His low shot bounced beyond the Blues’ second trialist keeper who was spared the ignominy of his first action being collecting the ball from his net by the post.

As is often the case with pre-season friendlies, the host of changes slowed Wycombe’s attacking impetus somewhat and they struggled to get going.

Paris Cowan-Hall appeared to be particularly sluggish and a loose pass from the Millwall loanee almost handed Brentford their second.

The ball fell to Tom Field wide on the left and his deep cross was headed back across goal and inches wide of the post.

Wycombe had been quiet throughout the second period, but burst into life with 13 minutes to play.

The upturn was sparked by a stunning volley from the right-midfield trialist from 25 yards which cannoned off the inside of the post.

The ball was immediately returned from wide on the right and found Southwell unmarked at the far post.

The former Boston United man showed the sort of instinct which made him prolific in the National League to head down into the ground and level the scores.

It was mark of Southwell’s goalscoring qualities that he had been anonymous for much of the game but delivered on demand.

The concluding period passed by with little incident as both sides settled for a draw in what was a well-contested match.
