Wycombe Wanderers were stunned by two old boys as Scott Rendell and Matt McClure scored early on to lead Aldershot Town to a 2-1 win.

Will De Havilland marked his first match for the club with a consolation goal with two minutes remaining but it was too little too late for Wycombe.

Wanderers never recovered from the nine minute Aldershot barrage which left them facing an uphill challenge at the EBB Stadium.

The Blues struggled to create throughout the match and, despite an improved second half, could have no complaints about the result.

The result means Wanderers are without a win in four matches ahead of their final pre-season game against Maidenhead on Saturday.

Wycombe announced the signings of goalkeeper Scott Brown and defender De Haveland prior to kick-off and Gareth Ainsworth gave them both starts.

He was without Aaron Pierre after the defender picked up a knee injury in the 0-0 draw with QPR on Friday, while Paul Hayes and Paris Cowan-Hall also missed out.

There was one surprise on the Wycombe bench with Ainsworth opting to name himself among the visitor’s substitutes.

Former Wanderers boss Gary Waddock returned to Aldershot in May and will be looking to take the Shots out of the National League next season.

His side started brightly and looked intent to play a passing game which helped them establish their shock two-goal lead early on.

It was two former Wycombe men who did the damage as a fine passing move saw McClure square from the left for Rendell to tap home unmarked from six yards.

The Shots seemed intent to challenge a new look Wycombe defence and were 2-0 up inside 10 minutes.

This time McClure, who was constantly on the move in attack, took the plaudits with a perfectly guided glancing header inside the back post from an in-swinging cross from the right.

Wanderers appeared to be stunned by the start and took the best part of 20 minutes to find second gear.

When they did a driven Garry Thompson cross almost created a route back into the game as it flashed wide off Jack Saville’s head.

In truth, Ainsworth’s men struggled to control possession and Aldershot were playing the far better football. The could have been further ahead but for the intervention of Brown from Iffy Allen’s curling effort from distance and McClure’s wayward aim from a close-range header.

Wanderers’ willingness to resort to long ball football in the first 45 minutes did not help their cause and they rarely got through the Shots’ solid defence.

They could have been level a minute before the break, however, after Adebayo Akinfenwa controlled well on his chest and teed up Sam Wood to cross.

His left-footed clip found Thompson in space some 12 yards from goal and the forward’s looping header clipped the top of the bar.

It would have been harsh on Aldershot to concede and they were good value for their advantage at the interval.

A move to 4-3-3 during the half-time break facilitated the most fluid spell of play from Wycombe shortly after the restart.

Again Akinfenwa was at the heart of it as he nodded down Thompson’s deep cross from the right wing.

The loose ball fell to the onrushing Marcus Been who immediately struck a right footed volley from eight yards which was bravely blocked.

The change in formation certainly brought the best out of Thompson and his incessant running gave Wycombe a decent outlet before he was withdrawn after the hour.

He was one of six players to make way and the changes brought an immediate response with Danny Rowe breaking with purpose from midfield.

His pass found Michael Harriman who crossed immediately and Nick Freeman’s miscued volley hit the turf and bounced against the top of the crossbar.

Freeman, who signed for the club on Friday, was bright throughout his 30 minute cameo and his left foot volley drew a save from Jake Cole with 12 minutes to play.

The effort signalled the start of a late flurry of pressure for the Chairboys, and they were rewarded with a goal in the 88th minute as De Havilland turned home.

It was a simple goal in its execution as a deep free kick was sent back across the face of goal and poked home from two yards.

The strike meant little in the grand scheme of things though and Aldershot saw out the remaining time with relative ease.
