Gareth Ainsworth says holding onto players will be Wycombe Wanderers’ only concern in the final throws of the transfer window, which closes on Wednesday.

The Blues boss maintains there will be no more incoming players at the club, but stressed fears about losing some of his star names will remain until the window shuts.

Aaron Pierre has reportedly attracted interest from Burton Albion and QPR during the summer window, and the defender may be the most likely player to depart the club.

Ainsworth said: “We always have concerns about players leaving, there won’t be anyone coming in though.

“We live in the shadow of Aaron Pierre moving on because he has done so well here.”

The 23-year-old was offered a one-year contract extension at the end of last season, which he has so far declined to sign.

With just a year left on his current deal, Wanderers would be likely to miss out on a sizable transfer fee if they opted not to sell him.

Ainsworth has added Max Muller and Will De Havilland to his central defensive options, but says the signings had nothing to do with preparing for Pierre potentially leaving.

“It is just because they are good players, and we try and add good players to the squad. Aaron Pierre is a Wycombe player and I am not trying to replace him,” Ainsworth told the Bucks Free Press earlier this month.

“He has a year on his contract and we want to try and keep him longer than that. We won’t be giving Aaron Pierre away, not a chance.”

The financial situation at Wanderers means turning a profit on young players is an important part of servicing the club’s debt.

Ainsworth, therefore, views any interest in young players at the club as a positive, while also making it clear Wanderers will only sell at the right price.

He said: “We have starlets in Harriman, Anthony Stewart and Luke O’Nien and they are all saleable assets for Wycombe Wanderers.

“I intend to make Nick Freeman and Will De Havilland similar assets to the club, so it is a good place to be. Nobody will leave cheaply believe me.”
